Providence Health & Services Director of Nursing - ED, Critical Care in Tarzana, California


Providence is calling a Director of Nursing (Full time/Day shift) to Providence Tarzana Medical Center in Tarzana, CA.

We are seeking a Nursing Director who will provide leadership for the Emergency Department, Critical Care, Rapid Response Team, and Float Pool.

PLEASE NOTE: Candidates that have Emergency Room experience will be given preference for this role.

In this position you will:


  • Promote patient, physician and employee satisfaction by personal example, treating all contacts with respect

  • Support and participate in activities that foster customer service

  • Communicate and follow the organizational chain of command for notification of patient care/service issues, when appropriate


  • Maintain required applicable licensure, certification and education

  • Attends and successfully complete general and department orientation, in-service programs and the annual key competencies and mandatory update requirements

  • Participate actively in department staff meetings

  • Demonstrate mastery of verbal and written communications

  • Identify and establish unit goals that are consistent with the Medical Center’s values and strategic plans; develop strategies for achieving goals; develop and implement unit policies and procedures to support the provision of high quality, individualized patient care; assure standards comply with accepted professional and regulatory requirements

  • Accurately prepare and analyze unit capital, labor and operating budgets. Establish both long and short term goals; remain within an acceptable variance of the unit’s budget; document, justify and correct negative variances, as warranted; communicate budgetary information to the staff; monitor FTE and operating budget variances on a daily/monthly basis to ensure optimum productivity and utilization of human and material resources; implement prudent measures to reduce operating costs while maintaining productivity and high quality of service

  • Establish and maintain high quality standard and performance expectations of all staff; demonstrate willingness to test new ideas; continuously assess performance and identified opportunities to improve upon the quality of care and service rendered by the unit; support and empower staff members to improve the quality of patient care; utilize positive group organizational and group dynamics to facilitate the change process; demonstrate and promote a collaborative approach with other units to assure the smooth integration of services

  • Serve as a patient advocate and clinical resource in the coordination and delivery of patient care; assure adherence to approved practices, procedures and standards of care; assure complete and accurate documentation of the nursing process for each patient; communicate, negotiate and resolve patient care issues appropriately and effectively with all members of the health care team

  • Ensure the ethical management of all clinical and managerial situations, assure patient rights, confidentiality and privacy

  • Effectively manage the human resources of the unit. Assure adequate staffing and skill mix for provision of services; appropriately interview, hire, review, promote, transfer and separate personnel; provide disciplinary action that is fair, objective, developmental and timely; monitor performance improvement plans for staff, as needed; delegate assignments appropriately based on individual levels of competence

  • Assure ongoing competence of all staff by monitoring their clinical performance and provide opportunities for growth activities and opportunities through training and education of unit personnel. The Director will develop, implement and evaluate job specific orientation and training programs; identified educational needs of staff; provide educational opportunities based on identified need; promote the personal and professional development of staff and colleagues; present and discuss changes with the hospital, with all staff members as appropriate; stimulate teamwork and foster commitment to clinical excellence

  • Develop, implement and evaluate quality control and improvement measures which are fiscally responsible

  • Keep informed of current trends and updates in practice by actively participating in the provision of educational programs

  • Ensure an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment. Is able to use all patient care equipment in the area

  • Demonstrate knowledge of age specific care, including but not limited to, identifying the need for additional safety measures, physiological normal values/readings; and assessing skin integrity, behavior, motor skills and/or activities that place patients at risk as well as communicate effectively in a clear, concise, understandable manner. Applicable for the populations Infant, Pediatric, Adult, and Geriatric

  • Meet monthly budget targets in wage (SWB) and non-wage (OCE) as well as productivity standards for respective department/departments on an ongoing basis

  • Direct maintenance of departmental facilities, equipment, supplies and materials in a condition to promote efficiency, health, comfort, and safety of patients and staff.

  • Maintain required unit records, report, and statistics for administrative purposes and budget preparations

  • Reviews trends in acuity data regularly and ensure that acuity is used in staffing


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing

  • Current CA RN license

  • Current BLS-HCP

  • Current LA City Fire Card within 30 days of hire

  • 3 years progressive management experience in the field of expertise

  • 5 years experience in an acute care setting

  • Ability to deal with multiple priority and short time frames

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing, or related field

  • National certification (CCRN, CEN, etc.)

  • ACLS

  • PALS

  • Experience in Magnet Designated organization in leadership role
