Providence Health & Services Laboratory Technician in Tarzana, California


Providence is calling a Laboratory Technician (Per Diem/Variable Shift ) to Providence Tarzana Medical Center in Tarzana, California.

We are seeking a Laboratory Technician who will report to the Laboratory Manager, this position is responsible for providing superior customer satisfaction, ensuring the highest quality care and service. Performs technical support and non-interpretative testing in various laboratory sections under the supervision of a licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Promote patient, physician, customer and employee satisfaction by personal example, treating all contacts with respect

  • Support and participate in activities that foster customer service

  • Communicate and follows the organizational chain of command for notification of patient care/service issues, when appropriate

  • Maintain required applicable licensure, certification and education

  • Attend and successfully complete general and department orientation, in-service programs and the annual key competencies and mandatory update requirements

  • Participate actively in department staff meetings.

  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communications

  • Demonstrate knowledge and performs work that is consistent with established age-specific policies and procedures, including but not limited to, identifying the need for additional safety measures, or activities that place patients at risk, specimen collection, processing and selection of appropriate equipment in all phases of testing (pre, analytical and post). Communicate pertinent age-specific information to all clients when needed. Communicates effectively in a clear, concise, understandable manner. Applicable for the populations: Infant, Pediatric, Adult, and Geriatric

  • Perform all required pre-analytical automated and clerical duties under the direct supervision of a licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist: Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Blood Bank and/or Microbiology.

  • Follow established labeling policies and procedures. Accept and reject specimens based on Specimen Acceptability and Rejection criteria

  • Collect specimens and takes them to the laboratory for analysis, using appropriate or specified equipment for collecting and handling specimens appropriate for their priority and stability

  • Centrifuge, transfer, stabilize and distribute blood specimens to appropriate workstations. Passes on hazards and priority information to team members

  • Coordinate, route and process specimens to appropriate areas of the laboratory, including processing of all referral tests for send out. Documents and reports all courier problems relating to the transport of specimens

  • Perform all appropriate computer-related functions such as ordering, logging in, printing and inquiry. Specimens are received in the computer and are processed in a timely manner with no undue delay. Printspending specimen logs daily, reviewed and reconciled to track missing specimens

  • Inoculate and process specimens from all parts of the body. Specimens for cultures are properly processed by following the inoculation chart, labeled properly and incubated in the correct temperature and atmosphere

  • Process specimens for testing, including pre-analytical set-up of specimens for automated testing

  • Process blood cultures in the Blood Culture equipment and performs equipment-related functions

  • Set up specimens for various drug sensitivities and microbial identification using automated and manual equipment and methodology

  • Perform all assigned quality control and preventive maintenance procedures and maintains related records

  • Request, monitor and stock supplies as necessary to keep materials on hand at all times

  • Participate, monitor, orient and train new employees

  • Demonstrate willingness & ability to float to areas within their scope of practice as necessary


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Education to meet certification, license or registration requirement

  • California Phlebotomy Certificate

  • Current LA City Fire Card within 30 days of hire

  • Non-interpretative laboratory testing experience
